Markus Wilfling, OK Center Linz

TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0 marks the kick-off of an exhibition format that is to be established in Austria. Together, the OK Offenes Kulturhaus Upper Austria, LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz, and the State Gallery Linz show a reprehenstative cross-sectional time line through the current local art scene, positioning Linz as a new centre of Austrian contemporary art.

MARKUS WILFLING
In his various objects, sculptures, installations and interventions, Markus Wilfling plays with the visibility of the invisible, with the materiality of the immaterial. Through shifts of meaning and humorous, sometimes ludicrous decontextualisations he charges objects from everyday life with surprising context-specific associations, which prevent an original use of the object and make the viewer reflect on its conventional use and characterisation.
In this process he has developed a personal language endowing the things with life and transforming their object quality into a subjective activation. In this way, Wilfling constantly plays with our perception. The artist is particularly concerned with spatial issues by examining a possible in-between, questioning blank spaces because of their latent possibilities and filling them up with his objects – which might also be described as extended sculptures.

For the TRIENNALE LINZ Wilfling assembles an »operativity instruction« consisting of an abundance of operating instructions of the most varied provenance. The artwork is presented on racks, drawers and sliding elements of a box-like piece of furniture. The object, reminiscent of living-room furniture, is presumably aimed at homely expedience, but it contains a conglomeration of instructions and content that are difficult to understand or find an explanation for in our specialised world of things. Wilfling’s order system, escalating in content and space, reveals the plastic adaptation of this system, the increasing rationalisation of our knowledge products and knowledge reception and the economisation of living contexts.
