MASS
The art historian Werner Hofmann refers to a work of art of any kind as the mirror of its beholder. This view seems to apply to Bernhard Hammer in several ways. Against the background of our individual knowledge about the phenomenon of human masses – dealt with in philosophy, sociology, history, literature, and, not least, the visual arts – the dialectical interaction with artwork is a process that can hardly be suppressed in the face of our own sense of (well-)being in society. Needless to say, the relationship between the individual and the masses, between our self and others, controls our daily lives. Going beyond this archetype of human consciousness, Bernhard Hammer also accomplishes a continuous development from the objective motif to the abstract and further to the monochrome, ranging from spatial representations to mere surfaces. By also showing plastic models, which became the motifs for his photographs made into C-prints, Hammer reveals his working techniques.
