Markus Wilfling´s works are based on a precise observation of given reality, its phenomena and optical qualities. In doing this the focuses his attention on everyday things that are usually scarcely noticed or not noticed at all, like on everyday objects in their capacity to throw shadows or be reflected. His aesthetic interest in actual reality is linked to a desire to avoid connecting his artistic realisations as individual creations to the subjectivity of the artist. Phenomena of the world of objects are taken to an artistic level in a non-mani-pulative way, free from mental bias and psychological motives.
In his installations and objects, the artist turns everyday situations into ambivalent ones, so that they hold your gaze, i.e. they slow down what is usually a cursory and automatic perception process. He consciously avoids the impression of something staged or artificial; the phenomenon of objects throwing shadows or virtually replicating themselves in mirrors is one that corresponds to people´s everday experience. Irritation results from the substantialisation of the virtual and cursory by Wilfling´s real-object replication of chosen articles, and here a transformation of relations from normal into aesthetic occurs. The visible leaves the world of natural phenomena and enters a word of art.
